A wonderful range of ideas is beginning to emerge through our IGCSE Art & Design work.

Students are exploring themes including joy, nature, identity, artificial, clutter and the changing relationship between people and their surroundings. Each project is developing in a very different direction, shaped by personal experiences, artist research, experimentation and individual choices in materials.

What makes IGCSE Art so rewarding is seeing students move beyond the first idea. Through drawing, photography, painting, mixed media and design development, they begin to question, refine and communicate something that feels genuinely their own.

A thoughtful and exciting collection of work, with every student bringing a different perspective to the classroom.

Traces of the Becoming Self

A deeply personal IB Visual Arts exhibition exploring how art can grow from a childhood passion into a possible future.

This student has long been fascinated by manga, anime and Japanese visual culture, drawing inspiration from artists and stories ranging from Hayao Miyazaki and Naruto to Gachiakuta. Without formal art training, much of their development has been self-directed, driven by curiosity, persistence and a genuine love of storytelling.

The exhibition follows a visual timeline from childhood to adolescence and towards an imagined adulthood. It reflects the tension between creating art for personal joy and wondering whether it could become a future career.

Rather than presenting work only on canvas, the student transformed the exhibition into a study-room environment using puzzles, mirrors, LED lighting, digital imagery and moving elements. These choices helped communicate ideas about identity, pressure, ambition and change.

In Through the Window, the World Breathes, Tokyo Tower appears beside the Japanese character 夢, meaning “dream.” Together, they symbolise the student’s hope of studying in Japan after passing their Japanese language examination.

This exhibition celebrates becoming: learning who you are, balancing discipline with freedom, and allowing a passion for manga and visual storytelling to shape the future.

The Illusion of Sanctuary

A very well-deserved IB Visual Arts grade 5 for a student who had not seriously studied Art since middle school.

Their exhibition explored a powerful contradiction: we create safe spaces to protect ourselves from pressure, but those same spaces can eventually become prisons.

Inspired by the high-contrast urban photography of Daido Moriyama, the student transformed familiar city architecture into unsettling images of isolation, anxiety and lost identity. Through digital photography, harsh black-and-white editing, deep shadows and distressed textures, ordinary streets and shelters became claustrophobic psychological spaces.

The exhibition was carefully curated in a darkened room, with six photographs shown in sequence under individual spotlights. Small images drew viewers uncomfortably close, while large A2 works at the end created a physical sense of being overwhelmed and trapped.

One particularly effective work, Erasure, shows the student’s shadow obscured behind frosted glass, suggesting that hiding from pressure can gradually erase a person’s identity.

This was a thoughtful, ambitious and highly personal exhibition. Reaching a 5 after returning to Art with limited recent experience is something to be genuinely proud of.
